Who are you, What do you want, Where are you, When is this taking place, and Why is this scene in the piece?
Doing this work will help you understand the character better. It is also useful for crafting a detailed and specific opening moment, which catches the eye and attention of the beholder. You may even uncover secrets or hidden motivations your character has. The point is to explore the possibilities – and the catch is that you don’t show off the possibilities that you find. Just knowing that you’ve explored such depths and breadths of your character’s existence adds shading and depth to the overall scene. Adding these complex layers to your work allows you to communicate your character simply and clearly to the camera. Once you’ve thoroughly explored the Five W’s, you should be able to relax and fall freely into your character and their circumstances, environment, and relationships.
