Power of Positivity

“What men and women need is encouragement. Their natural resisting powers should be strengthened, not weakened … Instead of always harping on a man’s faults, tell him of his virtues. Try to pull him out of his rut … Hold up to him his better self, his real self that can dare and do and win out! … People radiate what is in their minds and in their hearts.”

― Eleanor H. Porter, Pollyanna

“Oh, yes; the game was to just find something about everything to be glad about—no matter what ’twas”

― Eleanor H. Porter, Pollyanna

“Don’t be afraid to fail. It’s not the end of the world, and in many ways, it’s the first step toward learning something and getting better at it.” —Jon Hamm

“I’m not sure what the future holds, but I do know that I’m going to be positive and not wake up feeling desperate. As my dad said, ‘Nic, it is what it is; it’s not what it should have been, not what it could have been; it is what it is.’” —Nicole Kidman

You are a glorious beacon of light in the world. It is fashionable to look at the state of the world and see nothing but negativity. When this temptation comes I urge you to remember your inner Pollyanna. Remember her? She was a character in a series of  books written by Eleanor H. Porter which would go on to be made into a popular Disney movie. She was an orphan who used her “glad game” to find something positive in every situation. Positivity is so simple but so powerful. My blood type is b positive. This has never steered me wrong.

We can apply the glad game to our lives as artists. If an agent drops you, you can beat yourself up over it or see it as an opportunity to find a representation who truly believes in your unique talent and magic. When you don’t book an audition you really thought you nailed, you can instead be thankful that you planted a seed with casting and will be called in again. Something else is coming your way instead. The glad game also works in our everyday lives. If you get dumped by a romantic partner, feel that emotion then celebrate some alone time or the chance for a new relationship. If traffic is bad, think of it as a chance to practice your patience. You are exactly where you need to be. Even famous actors like Jon Hamm sing the praises of positivity. He reminds us that so-called failure can lead us to learn and ultimately set us on a better path. Nicole Kidman reminds us to be positive in the present moment and not get caught up in the should or could haves. Wake up each day and find the positive. I know we are positively glad you are a part of our family at Shari Shaw Studios.
