Celebrate Your Individuality
“Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter, and those who matter don’t mind.”
“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.”
“…There can’t be any large-scale revolution until there’s a personal revolution, on an individual level. It’s got to happen inside first.”
As an actor, we know that in this profession one must be vulnerable and give over much of ourselves to becoming the best storytellers we can be. We are encouraged to be ourselves and use what we each uniquely have to the table. And knowing who we are, only makes our craft stronger.
It can be difficult sometimes to celebrate who we are when the comparison game comes in. We think, “I should have done it like that.” Or, “I’m not beautiful/smart/nerdy/dark/moody/method, etc. etc. enough.”
Actors face a lot of rejection. A LOT. And the feeling of not being good enough as we are can be all encompassing. BUT, this is far from the truth.
Our individualities create a dynamic in characters that help them come alive on screen. Individual traits that others can relate to and be open to. Gone are the days of a traditional ingenue. The hero in the story can have glasses and quirks. Those characters are intriguing and authentic. What you bring to those characters are intriguing and authentic.
Celebrate your individuality, because when it hits for a role, it’s magic! You get the opportunity to share your unique self while being someone else. And this is such an incredible and interesting dance when it come together.
And know, that celebrating your unique traits shouldn’t just happen when you’ve booked a role. It should be happening all the time, because it’s gives you confidence in being who you are, helps you develop characters and practice them. It also gives you a strong growth mindset that is essential for mental health as an actor.
So play and explore with the things that makes you unique.
