“Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all the others” – Marcus Tullius Cicero
Every year on Mother’s Day, we take a moment to pause and pay gratitude to the amazing women that have birthed us, loved us, and nurtured us. As a society, we recognize their sacrifice and their value. We all stop for one well earned day to reflect on all they’ve given to us. However, rarely, in life, do we give ourselves the same courtesy.
Being an actor is way more than a career choice. It’s a way of life that requires hard work and constant nourishment. We have to be kind to ourselves, while constantly pushing for better results. It isn’t easy, but we do it because we love it. Because we must. Often, we can get stuck in the mindset that we’re not doing enough, we’re not where we want to be, that we aren’t enough. But this isn’t true!
Today, push those mean voices out of your head. Today, pause to show yourself gratitude. Gratitude for showing up for yourself, for believing in yourself, for loving yourself, for emotionally investing in scenes, for driving to auditions, for learning your lines, for supporting your scene partner, for being an actor… Being an actor takes dedication and drive. It takes giving yourself unconditional love and support. Your career is like your child, and you too deserve a moment to be thanked for all you do.
Have that extra glass of wine. Sleep in. Watch the game. Take a long bath. Eat a cupcake. Buy yourself a massage. Whatever it is you need. And then continue onward. Because like a mother’s love, you will persist.
